Plans for two major arts festivals in Bradford are progressing as part of the legacy from the UK City of Culture year. A new music festival is set to debut in Bingley, and the original Bradford Mela, a significant South Asian festival, is also returning. A recent council report confirms that millions of pounds have been allocated for these initiatives as part of the Bradford 2025 follow-on programme.
The report highlights that the local visitor economy surpassed £1 billion in 2025 for the first time. However, it raises concerns about the future of the Bradford Culture Company Ltd (BCCL), which has been instrumental in delivering the Bradford 2025 initiatives. The council is reviewing its future role beyond March 2027.
The funding set aside for Bradford 2025 legacy work includes £4.269 million over the next three financial years, coming from the previous Labour administration’s commitment. This funding is intended to support ongoing cultural events and the development of new ones, although specific details on venues and budgets remain undisclosed.
The report also indicates that the overall amount available to cultural organizations receiving regular council support will increase, and more than 20 projects are receiving grants for improvements.
Despite these advancements, a petition against diverting £400,000 of arts funding towards a recycling center in Keighley has gathered significant support.
The report underscores that while the entire £1.08 billion influx to the local economy cannot solely be attributed to Bradford 2025, it shows the potential for long-term economic benefits and aims to strengthen Bradford’s cultural profile further.
