What Is Pea Milk and Its Health Benefits?

The rise of plant-based milk alternatives has gained significant attention lately. Currently, these options constitute 14% of the total milk market, and by 2024, the plant-based milk sector is projected to reach a remarkable $21.5 billion in the United States. Among the various types, oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, and even hemp milk are widely praised. However, recent studies suggest that pea milk may surpass them all in health benefits and flavor, closely resembling the taste of cow’s milk.

What is pea milk?

Pea milk is a dairy-free alternative crafted from yellow field peas. Unlike many other plant-based milks which are made by soaking, the production of pea milk involves milling the peas into flour. The protein is extracted from the fiber and starch, then purified before being mixed with water and additional ingredients. The final product closely mimics the texture and taste of cow’s milk.

Is pea milk healthy?

Recent research highlights pea milk as one of the healthiest non-dairy options available. It boasts an impressive 150% more calcium than cow’s milk, as noted by Eating Well. Additionally, when compared to other plant-based milks like almond and oat, pea milk offers significantly higher protein content. It also provides essential vitamins A and D, along with potassium.

In terms of micronutrients, researchers have discovered that pea milk is rich in phosphorus, selenium, and zinc compared to other plant-based alternatives, according to the American Chemical Society. According to Ben Redan, a research chemist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and lead investigator of the study, “These plant-based milk alternatives could be important sources of these micronutrients if you’re trying to meet the recommended dietary allowances for them.” Pea milk parallels cow’s milk in micronutrient content.

Moreover, pea milk is environmentally friendly. Yellow field peas are inexpensive to cultivate, requiring significantly less water and resources compared to other non-dairy milk options.

Where can I find pea milk?

More grocery stores are beginning to stock pea milk in their refrigerated sections. A popular brand, Ripple, is available at major retailers such as Target, Walmart, and Amazon, alongside national grocery chains like H-E-B, Kroger, and Whole Foods. Other brands producing pea milk include Sproud and Bolthouse Farms.
