Discovering Kohler, Wisconsin: A Tale of Kindness and Community
My first visit to Kohler, Wisconsin, was marked by significant life news—my unexpected pregnancy. It was the only getaway during my pregnancy, and I hadn’t yet shared the news, except with my massage therapist at Kohler Waters Spa. At the end of my treatment, she surprised me with a small rubber duck—a thoughtful gesture to celebrate my news.
Fast forward nearly three years, and I returned to Kohler as a proud mother of twin girls. When I recounted my story to the spa staff, they joyfully gifted me two baby rubber ducks for my daughters, reminding me that it’s the kindness of such gestures that makes Kohler special.
The Heart of Kohler
Kohler is more than just a resort; it’s a model village built around the vision of the Kohler family, who made it a point to create a community for their employees. The streets are lined with parks and green spaces, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere that extends beyond the resort itself.
Walking around the village, you’ll find The American Club—once a refuge for immigrant workers—now a hub of dining and social activities accessible to everyone. Nearby, the adults-only Carriage House and the Shops at Woodlake offer a range of experiences, from spa treatments to unique shopping.
Exploring the Local Charm
Delighting in local art is half the fun—sculptures from the Kohler Artwalk are found throughout the village, creating an open-air gallery feel. A visit is incomplete without stopping by the Shops at Woodlake, where I find treasures at places like Sweet Potato’s and Little Love, enjoying the small-town charm.
When hunger strikes, options abound. The Immigrant Restaurant offers exquisite multi-course meals in an old-world dining room, while my favorite more casual spot, The Horse & Plow, serves up comforting cheese curds—a Wisconsin must. Each meal is memorable, showcasing local flavors and hospitality.
Crafting the Perfect Day
My ideal day in Kohler begins at The Greenhouse, enjoying a French toast latte and a pastry in the flower-filled courtyard. There’s plenty to do: from Yoga on the Lake to exploring the trails at River Wildlife, or even playing golf at renowned courses like Whistling Straits.
Eventually, each day brings me back to the Kohler Waters Spa. Here, amidst the serene atmosphere, I find respite from the digital world. Locking away phones promotes genuine relaxation and an atmosphere of calm—a rare luxury in today’s fast-paced life.
The Graciousness of Kohler
Ultimately, what defines Kohler for me isn’t just its attractions but the feeling it evokes—a quaint community with tree-lined streets, public art, and welcoming shops where I always end up lingering. Kohler has shown me that kindness makes a lasting impression, as symbolized by those three tiny rubber ducks. After exploring countless small towns, Kohler remains the one I cherish and recommend most, for it offers not just scenic beauty, but a profound sense of belonging.
