Orange County Animal Services Restricts Stray Intake Due to Ongoing Shelter Renovation

Orange County Animal Services Limits Stray Intake Due to Construction

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County Animal Services has announced a temporary restriction on the intake of stray animals as construction begins near the shelter’s pet-receiving area.

Starting Monday, the shelter will only accept stray animals with urgent medical needs or concerning behavior. This limitation is expected to last approximately one week.

The construction work involves installing utility, fire, and stormwater infrastructure near the current shelter as part of a larger expansion project aimed at enhancing the facility.

Bryant Almeida from Orange County Animal Services explained, “We’re going to tear up this area because there’s got to be piping and wiring that’s going to go to the ground.”

During this time, residents who come across healthy, friendly strays are encouraged to temporarily care for them. They are also advised to search for the animal’s owner by checking for identification, visiting nearby homes, and utilizing local neighborhood groups.

“Sometimes people first go to the shelter,” Almeida mentioned. “It’s not that hard to knock on doors and ask, ‘Hey, does this dog belong to you?’”

Despite the intake limitations, adoptions and other essential services will continue as usual.

The planned expansion of the Orange County Animal Services facility will add over 123,000 square feet, allowing for better service to more animals and families.

Construction in the pet-receiving area is targeted for completion by Friday, October 9, with normal stray intake expected to resume on Saturday, October 10.
