Grain Silo Receives Artistic Makeover in Eastern Montana

‘It’s a catalyst for culture and arts’: 100-year-old grain silo gets mural upgrade

Art continues to flourish in Montana as community leaders aim to enhance their local arts scene. In Glendive, officials are transforming the GTA grain elevator, a century-old structure, into a vibrant mural, thanks to Bozeman artist Griffin Foster.

A Vision from the Heart of Montana

Foster’s mural reflects his experiences in eastern Montana, where he was inspired by the region’s agricultural backdrop during a branding event. Jaime Shanks from the Eastern Plains Economic Development Corporation notes that Foster’s personal experiences, including calf wrestling, deepened his connection to the area and informed his artistic vision for the mural.

Funding and Goals

The mural project is funded by a grant from the Montana Department of Commerce, part of a strategy to attract travelers off the interstate into local communities. Shanks emphasizes that developing tourism assets can drive visitors into Glendive’s downtown area.

Broader Cultural Impact

Community leaders believe this project will foster greater visibility for arts and culture in eastern Montana. Shanks expresses hope that Glendive can cultivate an arts presence similar to other regions of Montana, viewing the mural as just the beginning of that transformation.

The mural is expected to be completed by the second or third week of October, pending weather conditions, making it a significant contribution to the cultural landscape of the area.
