Israeli Duo Embarks on a Road Trip Through South America, Overcoming Breakdowns Along the Way

The Journey of Amir and His Wife in Bonita

Stranded in Patagonia
Amir Eshel, a 60-year-old attorney, along with his wife, found themselves stranded on a deserted road in southern Chile’s Patagonia. Their upgraded German motorhome, affectionately named Bonita, had suffered yet another mechanical failure — the fuel line had come loose from the fuel pump.

“It had already become an ongoing problem, happening over and over again,” Amir recounted. Frustration loomed as they pondered how to reach the nearest city.

Unexpected Help
Just as despair began to set in, a random knock on their window changed everything. A man named Juan, driving a semitrailer, approached to see if they needed assistance. Within two hours, a mechanic friend of Juan helped reconnect the hose with zip ties, allowing them to continue their journey.

Before parting ways, Amir learned that Juan had circled back after noticing they hadn’t moved. This act of kindness left a lasting impression on him: “I’m still in touch with them today, sending pictures from the road. These encounters of help in the middle of nowhere are truly moving.”

Life on the Road
Bonita is a 2003 Mercedes Sprinter chassis motorhome that has been Amir and his wife’s home for two years, allowing them to explore South America. Every few months, the couple flies in, continues their travel, and then flies back to Israel, leaving Bonita parked securely.

“The vehicle is in Paraguay now, at a garage,” Amir explained. “You’re constantly fixing something.” While his wife often finds breakdowns frustrating, Amir sees them as opportunities to create memorable stories.

A Home on Wheels
Living in Bonita offers the comforts of home: sleeping, cooking, and even a toilet. “You can park next to a river for two weeks and have everything you need,” he said. “What do you remember about your travels? It’s the people you meet and the stories that unfold.”

Amir fondly recalls random encounters that enrich their journey. From intimate moments with fellow travelers to exciting soccer games arranged through local connections, these stories remain highlights of their adventures.

Exploring the Unknown
Bonita’s ability to traverse off-the-beaten-path locations allowed Amir and his family to explore areas less frequented by tourists. He recounted captivating drives through northern Argentina, revealing breathtaking landscapes that typical travelers may not discover.

In Mendoza, a chance meeting with a local named Lelo led to an unforgettable experience at a Boca Juniors soccer game in Buenos Aires. This connection transformed a simple campground encounter into a lifelong memory.

Continuing the Adventure
After several legs of their trip, Bonita now awaits another adventure back in Paraguay. The couple has traversed through Brazil, Uruguay, Chile, and Argentina, embracing the unpredictabilities of travel.

Amir reflects on the beauty of their journey, emphasizing that it’s the experiences, connections, and even breakdowns that create lasting joy. “Because those really are the important things,” he said, encapsulating their philosophy of travel.

With laughter and excitement, Amir is living his dream, showing that the most memorable parts of travel are the people and stories behind them.
