Celebrating St. Francis of Assisi: Animal Blessings at Malate Church
Every October 4, Catholics celebrate the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and ecology, known for his compassion and love for all living things. At Malate Church in Manila, this year’s celebration included a special blessing for pets, drawing a crowd of parishioners who brought along their dogs, cats, and even a pet snail.
Father Leonito Distor, the parish priest, emphasized the importance of this tradition, linking it to St. Francis’ teachings about caring for God’s creation. Attendees formed a line to have their beloved animals blessed with holy water, a gesture of gratitude for the joy and companionship pets bring into their lives.
32-year-old nurse Gaudine Supnet, who owns four Shih Tzus, expressed her belief that pets are family members deserving of appreciation, although they can’t speak. Additionally, the church offered free vaccinations for dogs and cats, further highlighting the spirit of care and community.
This annual event not only honors St. Francis but also fosters a sense of gratitude among pet owners for the unconditional love their animal friends provide.
