Sacramento Running Club Honors Latino Heritage and Community

Corremos Sacramento Celebrates Latino Culture, Community with Every Step

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Before members of Corremos Sacramento begin their activities at Land Park, they find their rhythm. Latin music fills the air as participants dance, stretch, and prepare to move, creating a festive family celebration atmosphere with a DJ playing upbeat music for all to enjoy.

“Our warm-up involves a little bit of some Latino dance moves and some stretches as well,” says warm-up leader Mariana Reyes. “We combine the music with the moves, so it’s a fun warm-up.”

But Reyes emphasizes that the club is about much more than just exercise. “It’s not just about running; it’s about getting outdoors and building community.”

Founded by Dalia Ramirez-Robles in July 2022, Corremos means “we run” in Spanish. The Latino-led club was created to fill a void in the local running community and aims to cultivate a safe, fun cultural experience reminiscent of family gatherings.

“There weren’t a lot of groups, and there weren’t a lot of people that looked like me in the scene,” Ramirez-Robles shares. Since its inception, the group has grown significantly, with dozens attending its Monday gatherings, fostering relationships with running organizations, athletic brands, and local food vendors.

Participants Can Run or Walk at Their Own Pace

There is no pressure to be the fastest; participants can choose to walk or run at their own pace. Parents push strollers, families exercise together, and some even bring their dogs.

Ruby Pineda joined seeking a community to help her resume running post-baby. “Honestly, I started walking, and I just started doing the running within the last month or so,” she shares. Pineda appreciates that the Spanish-language music and culturally inclusive warm-ups allow her to share the experience with her son.

Sharing Latino Culture Across Generations

The connection across generations is evident, with Yoli Rodriguez-Thompson bringing her 6-year-old daughter, Julietta, to the club to keep her connected to her Mexican heritage. Rodriguez-Thompson values the community and music, providing her daughter with rich cultural experiences.

For participants, Corremos Sacramento turns running from a solitary activity into a shared journey, allowing them to exercise while celebrating Latino culture, supporting families, and building friendships. The club’s ethos resonates deeply: “¡Viva México!” and “¡Que viva Latinoamérica!”
