Musk acknowledges Tesla Robotaxi’s difficulty in spotting pets at night; Lidar technology excels in this regard.

Elon Musk has recently highlighted a significant challenge for Tesla’s Robotaxi service operating at night—detecting small animals like “grey kittens on grey tarmac.” This issue stems from the limitations of camera technology, which struggles with low-light and low-contrast scenarios. While Tesla is increasing Robotaxi’s operating hours to 11 PM, Musk admits that the main concern is ensuring the vehicles do not accidentally hit pets in the dark.

In contrast, lidar and radar systems are better suited for such conditions, as they actively measure distances and can identify objects regardless of their color or visibility. Despite this, Musk has long criticized these technologies, asserting that Tesla’s vision-based approach is superior.

The article also discusses Musk’s inconsistent stance on lidar and night vision capabilities, as well as the current limitations of Tesla’s technology compared to competitors like Waymo. As the company seeks to extend operating hours, questions remain about the adequacy of Tesla’s equipment for safe nighttime driving, highlighting ongoing safety concerns.
