International Energy Agency Reports That More Than 80% of Emergency Oil Release Has Been Implemented

Emergency Oil Stock Release Update (03 October 2026)

  • Release Status: Over 80% (approximately 325 million barrels) of the 400 million barrels pledged by IEA members in March has been released, according to IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

  • Context: This release aims to mitigate the impact of the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz and disruptions due to Ukrainian attacks on Russian refineries, which have tightened diesel supplies and increased prices.

  • Recent Actions: G7 countries agreed to release an additional 100 million barrels from emergency reserves over four months and plan to prioritize the release of diesel.

  • Coordination Efforts: The G7 also decided to coordinate refinery maintenance and avoid imposing energy export restrictions. The IEA will monitor the effectiveness of these measures and report back within 20 days.
