India triumphs over longtime rivals Pakistan in Japan to secure Asian Games cricket gold | Cricket

India’s men clinched victory over Pakistan by 19 runs in a thrilling Asian Games cricket final, marking a golden double for the nation in Nagoya, Japan. India posted a formidable total of 211 for six, bolstered by Abhishek Sharma’s 61 runs and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51. Despite a spirited effort from Pakistan, where Hasan Nawaz scored 96, they finished at 192 for six.

The match, held in an atmosphere charged with rivalry, saw India refusing typical pre-match gestures due to ongoing political tensions. However, post-match celebrations included an enthusiastic display of the Indian flag by its players.

Abhishek’s explosive 61 came off just 20 balls, while the team benefited from some uncharacteristically poor fielding from Pakistan. After a shaky middle phase, where India slipped to 133 for five, Varma and Shivam Dube’s late fireworks propelled them past 200.

Pakistan’s chase began promisingly, but they crumbled under pressure from Indian bowlers. Hasan’s explosive innings wasn’t enough, as he fell on the final ball of the match while attempting another big shot.

In the women’s category, India also claimed gold by beating Sri Lanka decisively, continuing a successful campaign in the tournament.
