Tom Kim secures military service exemption by winning gold at the Asian Games.

Tom Kim achieved a significant milestone at the Asian Games, securing gold and an exemption from South Korea’s mandatory military service. Entering the final round with a slim one-shot lead, Kim maintained his composure, finishing with an impressive performance that included five birdies and an eagle, carding a 64 for a three-shot victory.

In South Korea, able-bodied males are typically required to complete 18 to 21 months of military service by age 28, but top athletes can gain exemptions through major achievements. Gold medals at the Asian Games and any Olympic medals grant exemptions, typically only subjecting winners to basic training of less than a month.

Prior to this event, Kim had competed at the Paris Olympics, where he held a strong position but ultimately finished eighth. Following the Presidents Cup, he swiftly transitioned to the Asian Games, underlining his dedication to the sport despite his busy schedule.

The 24-year-old has had an impressive year, placing third at the US Open and winning the Scottish Open in July. He finished the Asian Games three strokes ahead of competitors Kazuki Higa from Japan, Ding Wenyi from China, and Thailand’s Sadom Kaewkanjana. In the team event, however, SH Kim of South Korea narrowly missed an exemption that his teammate secured.
