Kennedy Center Honors Relocate to Different Venue Due to Building Shutdown

The 49th Kennedy Center Honors gala will proceed despite the recent closure of the Kennedy Center, relocating to Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., on December 7. The honorees and broadcaster details will be announced later.

The event continues amidst a legal dispute over President Trump’s efforts to have his name added to the building. A federal judge recently blocked this attempt just hours after the Kennedy Center’s board voted to close the venue for renovations, which Trump threatened to halt if his name wasn’t included.

Concerns arose when a photo surfaced of Trump reviewing demolition plans while aboard Air Force One, prompting preservation organizations to seek court intervention to protect the building. A judge has since mandated that the Kennedy Center provide 30 days’ notice before making any changes, including demolition.

Last year’s gala, hosted by Trump and aired on CBS and Paramount, celebrated notable artists but received the lowest ratings in its history. It remains unclear if Trump will return as host for this year’s event.
