Bayer Announces $2.2 Billion Investment in New Albany, Ohio

New Albany, Ohio, U.S. – Governor Mike DeWine announced Bayer’s plans to invest $2.2 billion in a new pharmaceutical manufacturing site in New Albany, Ohio. This investment is expected to create around 600 high-value jobs and about 1,500 construction jobs.

Governor DeWine emphasized the significance of this project, stating it positions Ohio among global biomanufacturing leaders. Bayer’s investment is part of a broader strategy to enhance innovation in its largest pharmaceuticals market, building on over $7 billion spent on U.S. pharma R&D and manufacturing in the past five years.

CEO Bill Anderson highlighted Ohio as a crucial manufacturing base and innovation hub. The new facility will support Bayer’s expanding portfolio, particularly in oncology, cardiovascular, and renal care, while assuring the reliability of the U.S. medicine supply.

Workforce and Infrastructure Initiatives

Ohio’s appeal to Bayer included a focus on workforce readiness, facilitated by the upcoming Ohio Life Science Training Center, scheduled to open in summer 2027. JobsOhio is investing up to $30 million in the center, aiming to equip locals with the skills needed for biomanufacturing roles.

Support from Local Officials

Local officials, including Senator Bernie Moreno and New Albany Mayor Sloan Spalding, voiced strong support for the investment, underscoring its potential to create high-value career opportunities. The facility will enhance Ohio’s life sciences infrastructure, aligning with the goals of the Ohio Discovery Corridor, which connects leading medical and research facilities.

Strategic Partnerships

Bayer’s new facility is part of a broader vision to foster a collaboration ecosystem in the U.S. by linking academic innovation with manufacturing expertise. Industry leaders view this investment as a sign of Ohio’s growing prominence in the life sciences sector.

Future Developments

The first manufacturing module is expected to be operational by 2031, with a second module anticipated by 2034. Bayer plans to apply for a Job Creation Tax Credit from the Ohio Department of Development and seek additional assistance from JobsOhio.
