Filmmaker Erin Lee Carr is known for her compelling documentaries such as Mommy Dead & Dearest, I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth V. Michelle Carter, Britney v. Spears, and Fanatical: The Catfishing of Tegan and Sara. She is now taking on a controversial reality TV show from the 2000s with The Swan: Behind The Mirror.
In an interview with Mashable, Carr discussed her commitment to allowing the participants, known as “swans,” to share their stories and shift their narratives toward empowerment. She sought to include all contestants who wanted to participate and organized a reunion to celebrate their resilience.
The documentary unveils shocking revelations, including the existence of nude photos taken by plastic surgeon Dr. Randal Haworth of the Season 2 contestants. Carr emphasized her growing empathy in her documentary work, whether engaging with reality TV contestants or individuals like convicted killers.
The Swan: Behind the Mirror is currently available for streaming on Hulu.
