‘Paw-some Patio Fundraiser’ Aids Domestic Violence Survivors and Local Charities

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Begins with Fundraiser

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Thursday marks the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month. To kick things off, the second annual “Pets on the Patio” fundraiser took place at Fifth Ward Brewing Company, aimed at raising funds and awareness for survivors of domestic abuse.

Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services organized the event, highlighting an important issue: many individuals hesitate to leave abusive relationships due to their pets. “We have found that when people have to make that choice between leaving that relationship and leaving their pets, they’ll stay in that abusive relationship up to 2 years longer,” said Courtney van Auken from the organization. Providing a safe environment for families to keep their pets helps to break down that barrier.

Attendees were encouraged to bring pet supplies or monetary donations to assist with essentials such as vaccinations and veterinary care. Last year, the event successfully raised over $2,000.
