LSU safety Jhase Thomas may not have been born when the New Orleans Saints made their historic return to the Superdome, but he is well aware of his father’s legacy. Fred Thomas, a former cornerback for the Saints, played in that memorable game against the Atlanta Falcons on September 25, 2006, marking a comeback after Hurricane Katrina.
A Historic Game
In 2005, the Saints were forced to play their games outside New Orleans due to the hurricane’s devastation, experiencing an unusual season split between locations like New Jersey and San Antonio. The return to New Orleans was emotional, highlighted by Steve Gleason’s remarkable blocked punt that led to a touchdown, igniting the crowd and securing a 23-3 victory over the Falcons.
Family Legacy
Fred Thomas, who played for the Saints from 2000 to 2007, has always supported Jhase’s journey in football. Jhase, born on July 13, 2007, excelled at Destrehan High School before committing to LSU, ranked as the No. 33 safety nationwide.
“It means a lot to me to play here,” he shared, highlighting the significance of his family’s ties to Louisiana.
Rising Star
Jhase recently started as a safety in LSU’s game against Texas A&M, recording three tackles and a pass breakup in a commanding 35-6 win. With the Tigers facing McNeese State next, he aims to replicate his success.
“Dad said don’t let the moment be too big. It can be just like backyard football,” Jhase said, emphasizing his father’s guidance throughout his career.
Team Dynamics
As LSU revamped its defense, with the loss of star player Dashawn Spears, Jhase’s adaptation was crucial. Supported by veteran teammates, he found his footing quickly.
“Having a bunch of veterans around me made it a whole lot easier. It made me more confident on the field,” he said, showcasing his readiness to contribute to the team’s goals.
Looking Ahead
With the Tigers ranked No. 11 and looking to improve their season record, Jhase Thomas is poised to play a pivotal role in LSU’s defense as they continue to fight for success in the SEC.
