Woman Stands Up for ‘House Dresses’ Following Influencer Controversy: ‘Certain Cultures Maintain Distinct Clothing Styles’

TikTok user Yasmine (@yasminesays) addressed the cultural significance of wearing separate clothes at home after an influencer faced criticism for stating she has specific outfits for home use. Yasmine, with Arabic and Iranian backgrounds, explained that many cultures have designated “house dresses” or “house clothes,” and that pajamas are typically meant for the bedroom.

Her video garnered over 55,000 likes, sparking a broader conversation. Many commenters shared that having different clothing for inside and outside is common in their cultures. For example, a Caribbean commenter noted that their mother wore house dresses daily. Others, including Black Americans and members of the Chinese community, shared similar traditions.

Yasmine proposed that the influencer might have encountered less backlash had she referred to her outfits as “loungewear,” a more familiar concept in Western culture. This sparked further debate about the acceptability of wearing outside clothes, like jeans, at home, with many expressing discomfort at the idea.

Ultimately, the dialogue revealed that while clothing customs vary, the practice of designating home attire is widely recognized across different cultures.
