Stephen Elfenbein, Director of Alcohol and Other Drug Counseling and Education at Colgate University, has been part of the faculty since 2019. He collaborates with the Shaw Wellness Institute to foster a holistic health perspective on campus.
Elfenbein describes his role as a supportive resource for students, emphasizing a welcoming space for counseling and wellness. He enjoys witnessing students’ growth during their time at Colgate and treasures moments spent with them, from their first year to graduation.
His favorite campus spot is the drive from his home to Counseling and Psychological Services, and he often attends basketball games, though he expresses disagreement with referees at times.
Elfenbein highlights programs like the Good Samaritan Policy, which offers medical amnesty for students requiring help, underscoring Colgate’s commitment to a safe campus environment. He stresses that this initiative aims to ensure student safety and well-being.
Colgate’s “culture of care” is evident, with initiatives like Narcan access stations aimed at harm reduction and intervention strategies. Fortunately, the Narcan kits established on campus have yet to be used since their introduction.
Elfenbein also coordinates with faculty through a multidisciplinary council that addresses drug and alcohol issues, which includes student representation. He wants all students to know that many are invested in their well-being, whether for emergencies or day-to-day support. His passion is to educate students about risks and available support systems, expressing gratitude for being a part of the Colgate community.
