Latinos Run Charlotte: A Community Built Through Running
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Every Wednesday, dozens of runners gather in Wesley Heights for a three-mile run, fostering not just fitness but community ties.
From 20 Members to 150
Jose Escobar, the lead ambassador for Latinos Run Charlotte, emphasizes the importance of connection alongside physical activity. “We prioritize getting to know one another, breaking bread, and having cafecito,” he explains, highlighting the group’s familial feel.
From a modest start of 20 members, the group has expanded to around 150 weekly participants, with special events drawing crowds of nearly 400.
Embracing Heritage and Community
Jerson Espinosa, a relatively new member originally from Mexico, appreciates the club’s focus on wellness and cultural connection. “It’s great to meet other Hispanic people and see diverse cultures,” he shares.
The group recently celebrated its Hispanic Heritage Month with a flag run, showcasing participants draped in flags that honor their family’s histories. Member Cynthia Torres emphasized, “It’s important because it lets us embrace our culture.”
Friendships have flourished as a result of these gatherings. Torres notes that the club has helped her deepen connections with fellow runners.
Supportive Environment for All
Alexia Smith encourages newcomers, stating, “Everyone is very supportive. Don’t be afraid. Just come and show up.” The group invites allies of all backgrounds to join in.
Running Together for Change
Escobar reflects on how running has transformed from a chore into a joyous activity with the support of the community. He recalls a particularly poignant moment last November when the group stood in solidarity during a regional ICE raid.
In addition to weekly runs, Latinos Run Charlotte hosts fundraising events, having successfully raised about $30,000 for the Carolina Migrant Network, which aids immigrants.
With their blend of fitness and unity, Latinos Run Charlotte exemplifies the power of community through running.
