Remember Me Thursday Ceremony at the Michiana Humane Society
MICHIGAN CITY — The Michiana Humane Society’s Remember Me Thursday ceremony on September 24 offered a heartfelt opportunity to honor the pets that have enriched our lives and to shed light on the animals still waiting for their forever homes.
Hundreds of luminarias, dedicated to the beloved pets that have passed, illuminated the grounds of the Humane Society Shelter located at 722 Indiana Highway 212 in Michigan City, Ind.
Executive Director Johanna Humbert spoke about the significance of the event: “We join with all of you in sharing the sweet memories and perhaps a few tears that come with remembering those we’ve loved and we’ve lost. Tonight we celebrate every life represented here because we know better than most that somewhere between our hellos and our goodbyes there’s so much love.”
This year marked a special milestone, with the 2026 ceremony featuring the most candles ever lit during the event’s 13-year history.
Attendees also had the chance to meet animals at the shelter looking for homes, including adoptable pets like dogs “Leeta,” “Elvis,” and “Brutus,” as well as cats “Sandy,” “Bailey,” and “Mr. Buttons.”
Before the luminaries were lit, Humbert recited ‘The Prayer for the Animals,’ which asks for compassion and mercy for animals, especially those in distress.
“As each candle glows, may we remember that every light represents a life that mattered and a love that remains,” she concluded.
Looking ahead, the Michiana Humane Society will host its third annual Fur Ball on Sunday, October 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. at White Oak Farm Venue in Michigan City. The fun-filled event will feature a disco-country theme, an open bar, heavy appetizers, a DJ, live and silent auctions, and more—all aimed at raising funds for the shelter’s operations.
