The U.S. Energy Department has awarded Entergy $13.7 million in federal funding to enhance power delivery in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This investment aims to provide customers with more reliable and affordable electricity through the implementation of advanced transmission technology.
John Hudson, Entergy’s chief external affairs officer, emphasized that the new technology will help reduce congestion, enhance system readiness for large loads, and potentially avert high costs for additional transmission upgrades. The project will involve deploying dynamic line rating technology across over 1,000 miles of transmission lines, allowing the company to safely increase power capacity while utilizing existing infrastructure.
Through the DOE’s SPARK program, the initiative will also include geographic surveys, substation upgrades, and hardware integration, specifically targeting regions experiencing load growth due to industrial and manufacturing developments. The upgrades are expected to yield at least a 25% increase in transfer capability along selected corridors, with early estimates indicating possible capacity increases of 29% to 61%.
By optimizing existing transmission corridors, Entergy aims to better support new industries, attract investments, and sustain economic growth in local communities, ultimately leading to cost savings for customers. This four-year project will create a scalable model for advanced transmission technologies, enabling Entergy to adapt to changing constraints and modernize the electric grid effectively.
