Jefferson County Transit Awarded $25 Million for Cleaner Energy Facility
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The federal government is stepping up to support cleaner energy initiatives in mass transit within Birmingham and Jefferson County. Congresswoman Terri Sewell presented a $25 million check from the U.S. Department of Transportation to the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority on Wednesday.
This funding will be utilized to establish a new operations and maintenance facility designed to enhance cleaner energy and support the transit agency’s fleet.
Charlotte Shaw, CEO and executive director of the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority, emphasized the importance of this new facility. “Our garage and maintenance facility are crucial for ridership. If our buses are running on clean energy, we can better meet our service obligations,” Shaw stated. She also mentioned that this funding builds upon previous grants received by the agency and that construction is still some time away.
