Chicago Public Schools (CPS) recently canceled some lower-level football games due to issues with timely payments to referees. However, varsity games scheduled later this week remain unaffected, and CPS has stated that no further cancellations are planned.
CPS confirmed they worked with the vendor responsible for referee payments to expedite compensation, addressing the problem that some officials hadn’t been paid for weeks. Morgan Park’s coach reported cancellations for specific freshman and junior varsity games.
State Representative Kam Buckner highlighted the issue on social media, emphasizing the significance of these games for student-athletes and the potential impact on college recruitment opportunities.
The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) is monitoring the situation but has no direct involvement since officials are independent contractors. IHSA Executive Director Craig Anderson stressed the importance of respecting officials and ensuring they receive prompt compensation.
