Buda Author Publishes Children’s Book Celebrating Salvadoran Heritage

Local Author I. Angelica Garcia Celebrates Her Roots with “The Enchanted Notebook”

BUDA — I. Angelica Garcia, a local resident, has fulfilled her dream of becoming an author while honoring her mother and Salvadoran heritage.

Growing up without the best educational resources, Garcia cultivated a deep love for reading. She fondly recalls the joy of receiving her first library card in middle school, where hours spent immersed in books allowed her to escape into different worlds. Her passion for literature intensified after discovering J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.

Despite her love for books, Garcia recognized the lack of representation for the Latino community in literature—a challenge that persists even for her daughter today. Thus, she dedicated herself to creating a character with whom other Latinas could identify.

The inspiration for her work, The Enchanted Notebook, stems from her mother’s journey—migrating from El Salvador to the United States during the Civil War and facing hardships that prevented her from finishing school. The story follows Maya, a young girl who discovers an enchanted notebook that grants her wishes, all while learning that magic cannot eliminate life’s challenges. Ultimately, she realizes that love and family are her true sources of strength.

Initially pitched as a novel for older readers, Garcia’s publisher suggested adapting it for a younger audience. Hesitant at first but motivated by her experience as an educator and the need for representation, Garcia embraced this shift. Her daughter–the visual inspiration and namesake for Maya—plays a significant role in the narrative.

“My daughter embodies multiple cultures; I’m Salvadorian, and my husband is Mexican. While the Mexican culture is abundant here in Texas, my daughter’s Salvadoran side remained less visible. I aimed to bridge that gap,” Garcia explained.

She hopes The Enchanted Notebook will instill hope in young readers, especially in the Latino community, where many face significant challenges. Garcia believes that the current political climate often misrepresents Latino culture, and through her writing, she strives to present a more authentic narrative.

“My goal was to provide a voice and reflect a world that’s crucial to me. I hope it positively influences even one child,” Garcia shared.

The Enchanted Notebook will be available on Thursday, Oct. 1. It can be ordered through various retailers, including Bookshop. A book launch celebration is planned for 1 p.m. on Oct. 24 at Red Salmon Arts and Resistencia Book Store, located at 2000 Thrasher Lane, Austin.
