Milwaukee Initiative Celebrating 25 Years of Using Music to Build Community and Culture

The Latino Arts Strings Program in Milwaukee has been enriching the lives of Latino students for nearly 25 years, teaching them both traditional Latino and European music. Founded by Dinorah Márquez in 2002, the program started with 26 students and has grown to serve over 200 annually, guided by a dedicated team of 10 teachers.

Providing instruments and lessons, the program combines classical training with culturally relevant music, including the Mexican vihuela and guitarrón. Márquez emphasizes the importance of cultural representation in music education, allowing students and families to connect with their heritage through music.

Former student and now instructor Karina Rodriguez highlights the program’s role as a safe space for self-expression. Márquez recalls a parent’s heartfelt acknowledgment of the program’s impact, reinforcing the pride the community feels in representing their culture. The program continues to celebrate diversity in music, assuring students that their cultural expressions are valuable and respected.

The next performance is set for November 6, showcasing the talents nurtured within this vibrant program.
