Microsoft Affirms Xbox Is Not on the Market Despite Speculation of Selling Its Gaming Division

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Denies Sale Rumors

Asha Sharma, the CEO of Xbox, has firmly rejected speculation regarding Microsoft potentially selling its gaming division. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Sharma stated, “Xbox is not for sale.” She emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring Xbox’s success through strategic partnerships and operational models.

Amid recent layoffs and restructuring within Xbox, questions have arisen about the long-term direction of Microsoft’s gaming business. Reports suggested that Microsoft might be considering turning Xbox into a subsidiary or operating it with external partners, leading to fears about a possible sale.

Sharma’s leadership has already triggered significant changes, including the reduction of nearly 2,000 jobs and the cancellation of various game titles. The focus is now shifting towards major franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Minecraft, while properties like Halo have been reassigned to Activision, a company acquired by Microsoft for $69 billion.

Despite analysts speculating that the recent downsizing might signal a sale strategy, many doubt there would be buyers for the entire Xbox business, given the substantial investments and expenditures Microsoft has made. Sharma reiterated that Xbox is in it for the long haul, denying any imminent plans for a spinoff.

With Xbox currently experiencing financial challenges, including lower profit margins than its competitors, the company is tasked with revitalizing its appeal to gamers, with ambitions of growing its user base to an unprecedented one billion people daily through cloud services and new market expansions.

As Sharma navigates these complexities, Microsoft remains committed to its gaming division, striving to turn Xbox’s fortunes around amidst a challenging hardware landscape and rising console prices.
