Unveiling PoloFest: Ralph Lauren’s New Celebration of Polo Culture

Ralph Lauren began his fashion journey in 1967 with a collection of ties labeled “Polo.” By 1968, he expanded into menswear, despite having never attended a polo match. At that time, Lauren famously stated, “I’m selling a feeling.”

By 1970, Polo diversified into sportswear and accessories, but it was the introduction of the Polo shirt in 1972 that solidified the brand’s identity. As the Ralph Lauren universe expanded to include additional lines like Purple Label and Double RL, Polo became a key platform for his vision of prep, sport, Americana, and aspiration.

The brand found a particularly enthusiastic audience in Japan, with a significant relationship dating back to 1976. In 2012, Ralph Lauren launched RL Vintage, discovering a deep collecting culture for the brand in Japan, characterized by what David Lauren described as “a cult of Ralph Lauren.” Tokyo emerged as a hub for collectors dedicated to the distinctive American aesthetic that Ralph Lauren embodies.
