Hearing the Voice of the Sand
We drive towards Bashy Village, the gateway to Altyn Emel National Park, and stop at the Singing Dune (Aygai Kum) – a massive, 150-meter ridge of golden sand wedged between two mountains. What seems to be a straightforward walk quickly turns into a scramble; with each step, the sand feels like it’s liquefying beneath our feet. As we glide down the slope, the shifting sands produce a resonant, otherworldly drone that vibrates through our legs and into our chests.
While science explains this phenomenon as friction between sand grains, my guide shares a local legend: it is said to be “the soul of Genghis Khan, buried deep beneath the earth, recounting his greatest battles to the wind.”
