Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla addressed the United Nations General Assembly, condemning U.S. foreign policy under the Trump administration. He described the measures taken against Cuba, particularly the “energy blockade,” as acts of war that have severely impacted the island’s economy and caused extensive humanitarian crises.
Rodríguez highlighted that since January 2026, U.S. sanctions have intensified, resulting in massive power outages and a significant decline in basic services like water supply and telecommunications. He stated that the blockade has left essential goods stranded in ports, exacerbating the suffering of the Cuban population.
In contrast, President Trump labeled Cuba as an “absolutely failed state,” claiming that the regime would ultimately collapse under pressure. He indicated that his administration aims for a fundamental change in Cuba, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio involved in discussions with the Cuban government.
Rodríguez called for reform within the United Nations to counteract what he described as a global trend of militarism and economic coercion. He reiterated Cuba’s willingness to engage in dialogue with the U.S., emphasizing respect for sovereignty and international law.
Trump suggested that military intervention would not be necessary, expressing hope for a deal between the U.S. and Cuba to improve relations.
