Community initiative leads to the creation of a nearly $4 million animal shelter in Grand County.

The article discusses the opening of a nearly $4 million animal shelter in Granby, Colorado, which was significantly supported by the local nonprofit Pet Pals. Originally, the county considered closing its existing shelter, but Pet Pals proposed to raise funds to build a new facility.

Diana Farabaugh, from Pet Pals, led community fundraising efforts that initially aimed for $1.5 million but eventually totaled around $4 million due to rising costs. Through donations and various local fundraising initiatives, they received substantial support, reducing the effective building cost to about $2.7 million.

The new shelter emphasizes animal health, safety, and comfort, featuring state-of-the-art facilities including separate quarantine areas, thermal indoor-outdoor kennels, and community spaces for potential adopters. It was designed by architect Scott Munn and constructed in coordination with local contractors, who provided significant materials and services at reduced costs.

The community will celebrate the opening with an event on September 26, showcasing the facility that Pet Pals and county officials say marks a renewed commitment to animal welfare in the area.
