White House restricts CNN from reporting on Trump as he visits Tennessee on behalf of leading television networks.

The White House has decided to bar CNN from flying on Air Force One during President Trump’s trip to Tennessee for a college football game. This move marks the latest instance of tension between the Trump administration and CNN, a network frequently criticized by the president. CNN was originally scheduled to serve as part of the White House TV press pool, an arrangement that allows a small selection of journalists to report on the president’s activities, especially in limited space situations.

In a note outlining the president’s schedule, the White House confirmed the ban, leaving the press pool without a television representative, which means there will be no televised coverage from that trip. This follows a previous announcement where Trump had specifically banned CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from White House access entirely, which had already disrupted CNN’s reporting duties during a prior trip to the United Nations General Assembly.

Despite the ban, a judge intervened, blocking the Trump administration from enforcing this restriction and ordering the restoration of the credentials for the affected reporters. The status of ongoing White House pool access remains uncertain, but other major networks, including Fox, NBC, ABC, and CBS, have indicated they would withhold cooperation until CNN’s access is reinstated.

Recently, CNN has rejoined the news pool, covering a visit by Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The implications of the White House’s decision on CNN’s litigation against the ban are still unclear, with legal representatives indicating that the judges’ restoring access could include White House pool privileges.

Major news organizations are under a deadline to request a preliminary injunction to suspend Trump’s ban longer term. CNN has refrained from commenting on this situation and is awaiting a response from the White House.

The TV pool system is crucial for providing coverage of presidential events to the public, and experts emphasize that independent media is essential to ensure the press can observe and report freely. The restrictions imposed by the Trump administration have raised concerns over the potential for “state TV,” with calls for independent media voices to maintain the integrity of the news.
