A Unique Pet: Adrian Zuniga and Scrappy the Red Fox
Adrian Zuniga has found a unique companion in Scrappy, his 6-month-old red fox. Taking walks with Scrappy in Casper and Lander turns heads and draws curious onlookers everywhere they go.
Zuniga describes foxes as “nature’s ninjas,” highlighting their elegance, beauty, and softness. He enjoys sharing his experiences with people who stop to ask what it’s like to own a fox. His answer? “They are 100% their own.” Owning a fox requires constant attention and dedication—each day is a training day.
How It Started
Zuniga’s journey with Scrappy began unexpectedly when a friend discovered three orphaned cubs on his property. After determining their mother was missing, he took in one of the cubs, who has since grown from a tiny furball to a beautiful, energetic fox.
Zuniga describes Scrappy’s rapid growth: “He went from a little figure about the size of a high-top sneaker to looking like he’s on stilts.” As Scrappy has matured, he has developed distinct preferences, preferring petting over being held.
A Rare Kind of Energy
People often ask if Scrappy behaves more like a dog or a cat. Zuniga insists he’s fully fox, comparing him to a dog “that runs on lightning and energy drinks.” To accommodate Scrappy’s nocturnal tendencies, Zuniga’s schedule adapts to the fox’s needs, which includes 2 a.m. walks covering an average of 3 miles each time.
A Family Member
Scrappy quickly became an integral part of the Zuniga family. Zuniga’s 15-year-old son, Ty, enjoys playing with him, and Zuniga describes their relationship as close to that of siblings. Scrappy’s unique way of playing often involves him stealing an item and challenging whoever is nearby to catch him.
Navigating Pet Laws
Having a fox as a pet is legal in Wyoming, among a few states. Zuniga registered Scrappy as required, staying aware of differing county regulations. Although their home is in a county where owning a fox is permitted, Zuniga is careful when traveling in areas where it’s not.
Scrappy’s Adventures
Although Scrappy’s curiosity has led him “lost” a few times, he always returns home, demonstrating his remarkable sense of direction. Zuniga recounts moments when Scrappy has gone exploring yet still knows how to find his way back, giving him confidence in his pet’s backyard adventures.
Wild Instincts
While Zuniga fully embraces Scrappy as part of their family, he also acknowledges the wild instincts that come with raising a fox. Foxes can be messy, especially around water, and Scrappy does not hesitate to engage in any plaything left unattended.
Zuniga provides a balanced diet for Scrappy, which includes freeze-dried meat and specially formulated kibble. He knows that the bond they share might not be permanent, admitting there may come a time when he must consider a sanctuary for Scrappy.
The Future
Despite the uncertainties of having a wild animal as a pet, Zuniga enjoys every moment with Scrappy, noting that many people love seeing him out and about. He welcomes conversations about foxes with open arms, appreciating the chance to share his unique experience.
“Scrappy is a magical critter,” Zuniga reflects. “He will get all the conversations going, and I’m open to it.” With this delightful pet, the Zuniga family is certainly making the most of their extraordinary adventure.
