Analyst: Soaring Energy Prices Draw Attention to Michigan Rate Increase in Election Season

As Michigan approaches the 2026 election, the focus is intensifying on rising energy costs and potential rate hikes from the state’s major utilities. Sarah Montalbano, an energy policy analyst at Always On Energy Research, highlighted in a recent interview that high energy prices are a top concern for voters.

DTE Energy has proposed a $474 million electric rate hike, following a prior approval for a $242 million increase. Additionally, a $75 million natural gas rate hike took effect on October 1. While DTE asserts that these increases are essential for maintaining reliable energy, Montalbano emphasized the importance of scrutinizing how these funds are allocated, particularly towards intermittent energy sources like wind and solar, as well as a proposed large battery center.

Meanwhile, Consumers Energy is seeking a $456 million electric rate hike, which could lead to an increase of about $13 per month for average residential customers starting in May 2027, pending approval. Consumers Energy serves approximately 1.9 million customers with electricity and 1.8 million with natural gas, while DTE Energy services around 2.3 million and 1.3 million, respectively. The Michigan Public Service Commission has deadlines set for decisions on these requests in 2027.
