Louise Erdrich receives the prestigious Gish Prize for artistic achievement.

Louise Erdrich has been awarded the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize, recognizing her significant contributions to literature and community engagement. This honor has led her to reflect on the collaborative nature of writing, emphasizing how her experiences as a bookstore owner have shaped her appreciation for the collective effort behind literary creation.

The Gish Prize, named after silent film actors Dorothy and Lillian Gish, celebrates individuals whose work enhances the beauty of the world and enriches human experience. Previous recipients include notable figures like Bob Dylan and Frank Gehry. At 72, Erdrich is already a seasoned novelist, winning the Pulitzer Prize in 2020 for “The Night Watchman” and the National Book Award in 2012 for “The Round House.”

In a recent interview, she expressed admiration for the Gish sisters’ ability to recognize the contributions of everyone involved in film production, which resonates with her mission at Birchbark Books, an independent bookstore she co-founded that focuses on promoting Native culture and literature. Sara Reisman from the Gish selection committee highlighted how Erdrich’s work, both in writing and through Birchbark Books, fosters a deeper understanding of Indigenous life and supports diverse voices in literature.
