As Pope Leo XIV embarked on his Apostolic Journey to France from September 25 to 28, he greeted journalists with warmth, emphasizing his mission of peace. “Good morning! Happy to see you all,” he welcomed the reporters aboard the flight.

He conveyed a heartfelt message about the significance of spreading the peace of Christ in today’s tumultuous world. “This message is particularly important,” he noted, highlighting the crucial topics he intends to address during the trip.

The plane buzzed with excitement, hosting over 80 journalists from 10 countries, ready to share the Pope’s journey with audiences worldwide. The atmosphere was lively, with conversations in various languages echoing across the aisles.

Apologies and Engagements

Pope Leo XIV also took a moment to express his apologies for an incident during his previous Apostolic Journey to Spain, where logistical issues separated him from journalists on the return flight. “I know this left a number of you unhappy,” he acknowledged.

In a light-hearted spirit, he greeted each journalist, exchanging jokes, questions, and gifts. He reiterated the importance of good coverage, especially in light of recent challenges faced by journalists at the White House.

The Pope addressed inquiries ranging from artificial intelligence to sports, discussing the Vatican Commission’s dialogue in AI development and voicing his support for his alma mater, Villanova University, during a basketball game against Notre Dame.

On a personal note regarding Archbishop Fulton Sheen, he reflected fondly on watching him with family, emphasizing Sheen’s impactful message and its significance in his upbringing.

Addressing Crucial Issues

During the conversation, he responded to concerns regarding current crises, including the recent migration issues in Ceuta and the devastating natural disasters in Spain. He emphasized the need for proactive responses and the role of prayer in facing such tragedies.

A Spanish journalist moved the Pope with a gift—a cross made from wood charred in recent wildfires, symbolizing the challenge of environmental disasters. He reminded all of the responsibility to care for our common home.

In a poignant moment, a Venezuelan photojournalist presented him with a collection of letters from earthquake survivors, invoking empathy for those still recovering from tragedy.

As the flight continued towards France, Pope Leo XIV reassured journalists of his commitment to fostering dialogue and peace, urging collective efforts in addressing the world’s pressing issues.
