The Cardinals Sent Cooper Hjerpe Down
The St. Louis Cardinals are in the final stretch of the 2026 MLB season, with just three games remaining. Despite their position, they made a notable decision to option rookie pitcher Cooper Hjerpe to Triple-A. This move was announced after a recent loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, which brought their season record to 77-82.
Recent Games and Performance
Hjerpe made an impressive appearance against the Pirates, contributing 3 1/3 shutout innings following Kyle Leahy. This outing was noted as one of his best so far, but it will also be his last appearance of the season due to this optioning decision.
Reasoning Behind the Move
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Cardinals are looking to add a fresh arm in preparation for their upcoming series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Hjerpe’s optioning came despite him not pitching again before the season wraps up on September 27. The Cardinals had been using him every six days since his promotion, making his absence from the roster a strategic, albeit surprising move.
This decision raises questions about the need to option Hjerpe, especially as the Cardinals have expanded their roster to 28 players. With only three games left and the team’s playoff hopes extinguished, it might have been beneficial to keep Hjerpe in the big leagues for experience, even if he didn’t pitch again.
Implications for the Future
While Hjerpe can’t contribute anymore this season, the Cardinals may be evaluating options for the 2027 lineup. The logistics of bringing in a new pitcher now could imply that St. Louis is looking towards the future, potentially testing prospects who could impact the team moving forward.
As the Cardinals navigate these last games, fans will be keen to see how this decision affects the team dynamics and their strategies as they look to rebuild for next season.
