Rising Electricity Costs and Energy Demand are Major Worries for Virginians

The article discusses the growing concerns of Virginia voters regarding high electric bills and the potential merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra Energy. A recent poll reveals that nearly two-thirds of Virginians believe their electric bills are excessively high, attributing the cause to rising energy demand, monopolistic utility practices, and profit-driven companies.

The poll, commissioned by the Virginia Distributed Solar Alliance, indicates that a significant portion of voters (8 out of 10) believe addressing electricity costs should be a priority for state lawmakers. Despite this, many respondents were unaware of the merger, with 75% having heard little or nothing about it. Awareness increased after providing additional information, which resulted in a significant shift in opposition from 36% to 63%.

In response to the potential merger and public feedback, the CEOs of both companies proposed enhanced customer benefits, including extending bill credits. However, responses to the proposal indicate that many voters are looking for stronger guarantees, such as a commitment to not increase customer rates.

The article highlights a crucial opportunity for state lawmakers to engage more actively in the merger discussion, as many voters wish for an extension of the review period. Critics have expressed the need for further legislative action to protect ratepayers, although some officials believe existing laws provide sufficient scrutiny.

Overall, the sentiment among Virginians is a desire for accountability from utility companies and effective solutions to manage rising energy costs.
