Safeguarding Pets Against Rabies in Bat Season

As temperatures drop, bats seek warmer roosts, potentially near homes and pets. Animal control reports that rabies-positive bats are rare, with only 2 out of 62 tested this year confirming the virus. It can be hard to identify a rabid bat based solely on appearance or behavior, so any contact—such as bites or scratches—should be taken seriously.

Both humans and pets at risk should have rabies vaccinations, even if pets are indoor-only. If there’s potential exposure to a bat, testing is advisable to assess rabies risk. Keeping pets vaccinated is crucial for their protection. Always consult a veterinarian or animal control if contact occurs.
