Proposed Regulations for Planned Power Outages at Xcel Energy in Colorado

Xcel Energy is facing new proposed regulations regarding planned power shutoffs in Colorado. This follows a significant incident in December when the company preemptively cut power to tens of thousands of customers west of the Denver metro area to prevent wildfires, which resulted in prolonged outages for many.

In response, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (PUC) has initiated an investigation and is working to establish new guidelines to improve how utility companies manage these situations. Key recommendations include enhanced communication and clear criteria for initiating power shutoffs.

The proposed rules prioritize detailed plans for public notification, decision-making processes, and outreach during power shutoff events. A public hearing on this matter is scheduled for November 23.
