One Demo from Mouthwashing Publisher Critical Reflex Made Me Gag (Plus, Three Other Games I’m Excited About)

Critical Reflex Games Overview from TGS

Publisher Critical Reflex has made waves with its eclectic game catalog over the past six years. Notably, Mouthwashing and other indie titles like Buckshot Roulette have caught players’ attention. During my visit to the Tokyo Game Show, I spent time exploring their unique booth, which resembled an underground neon-punk bunker. Here are my impressions of four intriguing games that I played:

1. Tiny Chills – Not From Ear

Developer: Docktopus Games
Genre: Horror/Freak Game

Set in a small town plagued by persistent earthquakes and mysterious disappearances, Tiny Chills offers a surreal experience focused on ear-cleaning. Players assist in a mother’s decrepit ear-cleaning clinic, using bizarre tools to extract wax, bugs, and possibly monstrous entities from patients’ ears. The game’s unsettling atmosphere, along with its Coraline-like vibe and grainy visuals, create a uniquely disturbing experience that is both fascinating and grotesque.

Key Features:

  • First-person perspective ear-cleaning gameplay
  • Eerie sound design with unsettling patient knocks
  • Narrative hints of a larger mystery involving human disappearances

2. Grobnopolis | Last Days

Genre: Atmospheric Horror

In Grobnopolis, players assume the role of an apartment caretaker in Huta-Grobno, where the air is thick with smoke from a mining disaster. Interactions with various apartment residents and a mysterious radio weave a narrative of paranoia and dread. As players uncover secrets about the environment and its inhabitants, they encounter strange occurrences, including a growing crack in their kitchen that whispers ominously.

Key Features:

  • Atmospheric storytelling with a focus on environmental interaction
  • Themes of impending danger and a cult influence
  • An engaging mix of horror elements and a decaying cityscape

3. Sated

Genre: Roguelite/Monster Horror

Sated combines rogue mechanics with culinary challenges, asking players to cook for hungry monsters in a bizarre, engaging environment. The gameplay centers around fulfilling unique and abstract meal orders from various monsters while utilizing a slot-machine-like fridge to gather ingredients. The challenge lies in guessing the right amounts based on ambiguous guidelines, leading to an unpredictable and thrilling experience.

Key Features:

  • Engaging meal preparation mechanics
  • Roguelite elements with randomized ingredients
  • High stakes with a chance of becoming the meal if orders are unsatisfactory

4. Flawless Abbey

Genre: Surreal Adventure

In Flawless Abbey, players navigate a colorful and dreamlike facility designed for dream-seekers. The gameplay involves interacting with surreal environments, solving puzzles, and engaging with thought-provoking dialogue that unravels deeper narrative layers. The aesthetic is vibrant, offering a kaleidoscope of colors amidst a melancholic undertone, keeping players curious about their surroundings and the overall mystery.

Key Features:

  • Unique puzzle-solving mechanics within a fantastical narrative
  • Engaging art style combined with a compelling score
  • Philosophical dialogue interactions that reflect player choices

Overall, Critical Reflex showcases a promising range of indie games that push the boundaries of traditional gameplay, inviting audiences into bizarre and intriguing worlds. Keep an eye on these titles as they develop further!
