MOCA Appoints Jonathan Abbott as New Director Following Years of Upheaval

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) has appointed Jonathan Abbott as its new director and chief executive after a prolonged search amid significant leadership turnover. He replaces interim director Ann Goldstein, who stepped in after Johanna Burton’s unexpected departure to the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania.

Abbott brings 15 years of experience as president of GBH, a public broadcasting station in Boston, emphasizing his collaborative approach and admiration for creative environments. His appointment comes at a crucial time as MOCA approaches its 50th anniversary and seeks to recover from past controversies and operational challenges.

Over the years, MOCA has faced upheaval, including management issues and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to staff layoffs. Abbott’s leadership is seen as a potential turning point, with supporters like philanthropist Jarl Mohn highlighting his fundraising acumen and strategic thinking as essential to stabilize the museum’s future.

With a collection of over 8,000 objects, MOCA aims to broaden its audience engagement and maintain its relevance in the contemporary art landscape. Abbott expressed enthusiasm for the challenge and commitment to nurturing the museum’s potential within the city’s vibrant arts ecosystem.
