‘Drag Race’ Champion Nymphia Wind Delves into Taiwanese Culture at MFAH and River Oaks Theatre

Nymphia Wind, the recent winner of Season 16 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” is making her way to Houston, but not in the typical club performance setting. Instead, she will give a lecture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, discussing the creation of her drag persona, and she’ll also host a screening of the classic ’90s film “Eat Drink Man Woman” at the River Oaks Theatre. These appearances signify her aim to showcase drag as a multifaceted art form, transcending traditional nightlife venues.

In an interview, she expressed her thoughts on Houston’s cultural identity, emphasizing her connection to notable figures like Beyoncé while reflecting on her experiences as a Taiwanese artist. With Houston hosting a significant Taiwanese community, she sees value in sharing her art here—seeing it as a form of kinship among fellow Taiwanese.

Nymphia describes her journey back to her artistic roots, which began with her mother’s encouragement in childhood. She sees her recent opportunities, especially within museum contexts, as a return to her childhood aspirations of being recognized as an artist.

Throughout her “Drag Race” journey, she maintained a level of mysteriousness regarding her skills, relating this to cultural differences in how Asian individuals are taught to present themselves—often valuing modesty over boasting about achievements.

She recognizes her responsibility to represent Taiwanese culture on a global stage, especially given Taiwan’s political complexities. She aims to empower and connect with immigrant identities, having felt the impact of her representation among diverse audiences.

Moreover, she humorously notes the influx of fan gifts, especially banana-themed items, creating a unique bond with her followers and indicating the playful, whimsical aspects of her persona.

Overall, Nymphia Wind’s Houston events will highlight her dedication to infusing cultural storytelling into drag, establishing it as a significant artistic medium.
