Understanding Naked Capitalism: An Overview

It has been a tremendous honor to contribute to this platform, initially as a semi-regular commenter during the height of the ongoing pandemic, and subsequently, thanks to Yves Smith’s kind invitation, as a dedicated member of a remarkably talented team. Recently, I celebrated my four-year anniversary as a regular contributor. Time truly flies when you’re engaged in meaningful work! Thank you, everyone, for being part of this journey.

Why Naked Capitalism? This platform is not just a website; it’s a community. Though our interactions are virtual, the sense of connection is palpable. It’s also a vital source for current events and analyses. If you share this belief, the Tip Jar is to your right. Your support is invaluable and essential.

What makes Naked Capitalism such a vital resource? The only requirement for membership in this community is a commitment to good faith, intelligence, and the ability to engage thoughtfully without resorting to personal attacks. Here, engagement is serious; “fly-by trolls” are not welcome. This environment is rare—if not unique—in the realm of independent media. If you appreciate thoughtful discourse and free speech, the Tip Jar is to your right. Your financial contributions are crucial for sustaining independent journalism.

Why Naked Capitalism? Well, since February 28th, we have begun our weekdays with real-time summaries of the Ramadan War in East Asia, originally anticipated by the current administration to last about 96 hours. As of September 15th, that timeline has been exceeded by a staggering 5,208 hours.

This rapidly evolving situation has tested our patience and intellect, but Yves has remained steadfast in her reporting, with exceptional contributions by Nat when needed. Just as Sherwin Williams covers the world, Yves has thoroughly covered the complexities of the Ramadan War, providing original insights and links to those who effectively navigate the chaos.

Herb Stein famously noted, “If something cannot go on forever, it will stop.” Indeed, the Ramadan War will eventually come to an end. Until that day arrives, NC will be your primary destination for timely updates from around the globe. Once the conflict concludes, NC will continue to be a vital resource for understanding its aftermath. The Tip Jar is to your right. Your financial contributions are invaluable in supporting independent media.

Why Naked Capitalism? The site’s archive is extensive! Contributors like Nat Wilson Turner effectively analyze real-world issues with clarity. Curro Jimenez‘s insights on Peter Thiel unveil the layers of influence at play. Haig Hovaness recently shed light on Ted Postol and the inefficacy of missile defense, exposing many commonly accepted Pentagon narratives. Conor Gallagher covered the rising pressure against dissenters questioning the Deep State. Nick Corbishley examined the decline of the U.S. as exemplified by the rampant growth of gambling, a trend that threatens families across the nation. One can only hope Stein’s quote becomes a reality sooner rather than later. And let’s not overlook the Sunday Morning Movie, curated by semper loquitir, which some readers have dubbed the “Sunday Morning Semester.” Without his contributions, I would have missed out on gems like Dame Diana Rigg in In this House of Brede and Bertrand Russell’s reading of his Why I Am Not a Christian. Your financial support is vital for sustaining this exceptional journalism. The Tip Jar is to your right.

Why Naked Capitalism? The intellect of our community plays a significant role. In past seasons, I’ve written about our commentariat. While I could name individuals, I would inevitably overlook someone important. But their contributions are recognized. They hail from every corner of the globe—including the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Australia, Italy, Spain, and beyond. Their comments often resemble essays, varying in length but always enriching our understanding. I challenge anyone to find such insightful commentary elsewhere in independent media. We owe Yves immense gratitude for her vision and commitment, which have fostered this community. Everyone here gains from the wisdom of our commentariat. Your support for their intellect is essential. The Tip Jar is to your right.

Why Naked Capitalism? Lastly, on a personal note, I want to share my experience. As many of you know, I am a biomedical scientist and professor at a medical school, now with some administrative responsibilities. My engagement as both a reader and a writer on this platform has significantly enhanced my skills as a teacher and administrator (not all of us are bad!). For instance, I plan to discuss health insurance and its misconceptions with our preclinical medical students later this year. This growth in understanding would not have been possible without Naked Capitalism.

In my institution, we educate one student at a time, and many will graduate with a meaningful awareness of how the American medical system has devolved into a challenging landscape. Your contributions have the power to influence the future of medicine in the United States, making students aware of the pitfalls they may encounter.

Christa McAuliffe wisely stated that teachers leave a mark on the future. To all the educators here, including our commenters, thank you! And yes, the Tip Jar is still over there on the right.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Stay safe and engaged!
