Qantas has announced the upcoming launch of nonstop flights between Sydney and New York, slated for mid-2028. This historic route, part of the airline’s Project Sunrise initiative, will mark the first direct commercial flights between Australia and New York. Tickets for this inaugural service will be available starting August 2027.
The nonstop flights are expected to reduce travel time by over three hours compared to current one-stop services, linking Australia’s east coast directly with New York for the first time. This announcement follows the confirmation of nonstop flights from Sydney to London, scheduled to begin in October 2027.
Qantas previously began its New York service in 1958, originally flying via Fiji, Honolulu, and San Francisco. Currently, they offer daily one-stop flights through Auckland. The new Project Sunrise flights will utilize Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft, specially equipped to cover distances over 9,900 miles and accommodating up to 238 passengers across four cabin configurations.
As travel demand between Australia and the U.S. continues to grow, Qantas Group CEO Vanessa Hudson described the launch as a defining moment that underscores the airline’s commitment to overcoming the challenges of distance. Beginning in 2028, travelers can expect a streamlined journey, arriving in New York approximately 18 hours after departure from Sydney.
