The Fairfax County Animal Shelter’s Michael Frey campus is currently closed for renovations, causing a bit of crowding at its Lorton location. To expedite the adoption of over 60 pets, the shelter is partnering with the BISSELL Pet Foundation to waive adoption fees during an “Empty the Shelters” event from September 25-27. This initiative allows the shelter to facilitate adoptions without incurring costs.
All pets adopted during this event will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. The available pets include 20 dogs, over 40 cats, and some small animals. To further address the situation, Animal Services plans to host more events while the Fairfax campus remains closed and is reaching out to the community for adoptions.
Recent outreach included the Tysons Mixed Market, where a long-stay dog named Bookmark found a home. The Tysons Mixed Market will have its final event this year on September 24, featuring local vendors, entertainment, and an adoption event.
The Michael Frey campus is undergoing major HVAC updates, with an expected closure of about six months. Throughout this period, the shelter has focused on adopting out pets and increasing foster capacity, while also expanding resources for local residents to help keep pets safe and healthy at home.
The Lorton campus is open daily from noon to 7 p.m. on Friday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
