Introducing the Manx Poet: Blending Verse with Contemporary Culture

New Manx Bard Declan Focuses on Pop Culture and Folk Traditions

Declan, the Isle of Man’s new Manx Bard, expresses that his poetry embraces the “quirks of pop culture” while also incorporating elements from Manx folk culture and history. He emphasizes that his work is designed to be performed rather than merely read, stating, “I speak-sing my poetry, which is basically my territory.” Declan is eager to take the stage at Manx Litfest this weekend to participate in the Celebration of Poetry.

Installed as the 12th Manx Bard in September, a role that has been celebrated on the Island since 2014, Declan was previously involved in performing at poetry events. During a discussion about the purpose of poetry, he shared his belief in the importance of having a creative outlet, likening poetry to working in a shed or tinkering—something that helps people make sense of their lives.

About the Manx Bard Role

The title of Manx Bard connects to the Celtic tradition of storytellers and musicians preserving the history and culture of their communities. The modern initiative began in 2014 with the posthumous recognition of the Isle’s national poet, T. E. Brown, as the inaugural Bard. Each year, a new contemporary poet is selected for the role through a competition process. Declan joins the ranks of 11 other living Manx Bards, recognized as ambassadors for the Island, expected to promote poetry at national events and community gatherings, engage with schools, and connect with poets from outside the Isle.

Declan admits he is not a fluent Manx speaker, yet he finds ways to incorporate the language into his work. He is particularly excited for the upcoming Celebration of Poetry at Manx Litfest, as it marks the place where he first presented his poetry.
