Mobile leaders advocate for go-cup regulations amid the announcement of arena district growth.

Mobile City Council Prioritizes Local Business Support in Downtown Entertainment Districts

Mobile leaders are emphasizing that the downtown’s entertainment districts should enhance local businesses rather than devolve into bring-your-own-drink parties. This message was reinforced during a recent City Council meeting, where an ordinance was introduced to expand Entertainment District 1 to encompass the future Regions Arena area. Although introduced, the ordinance has yet to gain approval.

Councilman Josh Woods expressed support for the arena-area expansion but called for a reevaluation of enforcement within existing districts. He noted instances of people carrying open containers that didn’t comply with regulations, undermining the original intent of the entertainment district.

Currently, Mobile’s entertainment-district rules permit customers of licensed businesses to carry one alcoholic drink outdoors, provided it is in a designated paper or plastic cup featuring the business or LoDa logo. Cans, bottles, or normal glass containers are prohibited, and drinks cannot cross into other licensed businesses or different districts.

Woods pointed out that the design of the districts is to encourage movement between downtown venues while supporting local businesses. He proposed that enforcement measures need to be strengthened, possibly through more distinct cup designs to assist law enforcement.

The expansion aims to incorporate the new Regions Arena, which is anticipated to host a variety of events, including concerts and sports. Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis supported the inclusion of the arena but agreed that enforcement practices need enhancement.

He emphasized that the entertainment district shouldn’t turn into a BYOB environment, stressing its purpose is to reinforce local business and create enjoyable community experiences rather than informal street parties. Cheriogotis highlighted that while police are committed to maintaining safety, more focus on compliance with the “go-cup” rules is necessary.

Both Woods and Cheriogotis aspire to make downtown Mobile a safe, clean, and inviting space for families, concertgoers, and visitors.

NBC 15 will closely monitor the proposed expansion as it progresses to further City Council discussions next week.
