Lonely Planet has released its Best in Travel 2027 list, highlighting 50 destinations and experiences across six regions. This year, the list features a mix of broader destinations and specific adventures, such as riding the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India and taking a polar plunge in Antarctica.
Among the seven U.S. highlights are three locations: California’s Coastal Redwoods, Maryland, and New Mexico, along with four unique experiences: serving as a temporary keeper at the Rose Island Lighthouse in Rhode Island, flightseeing in Alaska, hotel-hopping in Miami’s South Beach, and driving Minnesota’s Slow Road.
The selections emphasize local travel, showcasing California’s towering redwoods, New Mexico’s diverse landscapes and Indigenous culture, and Maryland’s charming Chesapeake Bay towns. Special experiences include the solitude of being a lighthouse keeper, aerial views of Alaskan glaciers, and leisurely drives through Minnesota.
Globally, the list includes diverse locations from Okinawa, Japan, to Montserrat in the Caribbean, with culinary adventures in Taiwan and wildlife explorations in Malaysia and Tanzania.
The challenge for travelers will be to choose from these enticing options while considering their available vacation days.
