“Pets Are Living Beings” | Hawkinsville Animal Shelter Overwhelmed as Owners Face Limited Options for Rehoming

Bonnie Walker’s home in Hawkinsville has become a sanctuary for abandoned pets. Since childhood, she has cared for animals, starting with baby birds and expanding to wildlife rehabilitation. Now, her home is a refuge for many dogs and other animals.

Walker and local animal control officer Chandra Toledo highlight a troubling trend: an increase in dumped pets due to economic hardships, including evictions. They point out the responsibility of pet owners to find alternatives to abandonment.

The Hawkinsville shelter, with only 13 kennels, struggles to accommodate all the strays and surrendered animals. Most abandoned pets are found near county lines where animal control services are lacking. Plans are underway to expand the shelter, but simply adding more kennels won’t resolve the issue.

Toledo encourages those who can no longer care for pets to seek help from rescues or assistance programs, emphasizing the importance of reaching out before it’s too late. Walker believes education is vital, arguing that pets should not be viewed as mere property but as living beings deserving care and compassion.
